Highlights: Asian Cup winner Qatar held on to draw in FIFA World Cup qualifier match
Indian team lost to Oman in the first match
Indian team, held at number 103 in the latest FIFA rankings:
After a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Oman in the first match, the Indian football team made an unexpected performance and prevented Asian Cup winner Qatar from a draw in the qualifier match held at FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. The Indian footballers, who landed in the ground without their ill-fated skipper Sunil Chhetri, did not allow Qatar, who won the Asian Cup in January, to score a goal. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu shone as a star in the entire match and did not allow Qatar to score goals in Group E. India, ranked number 103 in the latest FIFA rankings, stopped Qatar, number 62 in the world, on their own ground.

There is no doubt that this is India’s best result in recent times. Earlier on 5 September in Guwahati, India beat Oman by two goals against one. India now have one point after the match with Qatar while Qatar have four points as they beat Afghanistan 6–0 in their first match. The last official match between the two teams was played in the World Cup qualifier in September 2007 in which Qatar defeated India 6–0.
